So, here are some quick highlights from our voyage from Dulles Airport in Northern Virginia, to Los Angeles, to Kauai, to Honolulu, to Maui, and back.
The newly married couple looking fairly awake considering that we didn't get to bed until after midnight and then got up to finish packing at 4:00 a.m. We arrived at the airport around 8:00 a.m. for our 9:30 a.m. flight. This photo was taken on the tram at Dulles on the way to our gate.
And here's our first image of Hawaii--okay, it you got me, I took this one at the Dulles Airport too. I think that there was a television screen that was showing all of the places to where United had flights. Still, if it's 8:30 a.m. and you've already been up for four and one-half hours, pretty much any image of Hawaii gets you pretty excited.
Luckily for us, our plane was on schedule. Knowing that we had about a five hour flight ahead of us, we were hoping that we would at least get a somewhat decent movie on our flight. No such luck. We got Mad Money, which starred Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, and Katie Holmes. I know what you're thinking...with taglines like "They're having the crime of their lives..." and "Taking the mone
y was easy. Getting away with it would be harder than they ever imagined," how could this be a bad movie. Thanks to my very good friend Joe Acheson, who gave Jen and me the NBA Dynasty Series - Boston Celtics - The Complete History (as well as this Le Creuset saucepan, which Jen absolutely loves!!!), I didn't have to watch one second of it.Jen, who slept most of the way, only caught the first five minutes and the last five minutes. Her assessment in ten words or less? "I only need one word," she told the Daily Variety. "Stupid. Diane Keaton and Queen Latifah are better than this." She didn't mention Katie "My husband is crazy!!!" Holmes.
A few more photos from the flight from Washington, DC to Los Angeles to Hawaii. Here's one that might seem a little out of place during a honeymoon, but I had to take a photo of the snow-covered Rocky Mountains (at least I think they were the Rocky Mountains) as our plane passed overhead. According to Wikipedia, there are several small permanent snowfields in the Rockies, but I didn't expect to see quite so much snow in early May.A few more photos before I end this blog post:
Here's a shot of us at the Los Angeles International Airport. We still look pretty tired, but at least we're five hours closer to Hawaii! Our travel agent told us that L.A. was pretty much the half-way point for a D.C. to Hawaii flight. I'm not sure about you, but I had no idea exactly how far removed Hawaii was from the rest of the continental United States!
Take a look at this map to the right. If you look in the very far bottom left corner of the map, you'll see the tiny tropical island paradise that is Hawaii (compare that to Washington, D.C., which, as anyone who passed third grade geography show know, is located on the right middle side of the map).
And if you look at the photo to the left (why do I feel like a tour guide?), you'll see a photo of the very first image of Hawaii that we saw on our flight! (Excluding the cartoony photo that we saw at the Dulles International Airport).No idea which island that is, where it fits in the chain of Hawaii islands, or anything like that. After approximately 10 hours in the air and 5000 miles from Washington, D.C., we were pretty lucky to even recognize that there was a large land mass off the
right side of the plane...but when we did realize that we were thisclose to Hawaii, we were pretty happy, as you can image.That's about it for this blog post.
